Top 10 Tips to Start Your Construction Career
If you do not want to get stuck in a dead-end task but have an effective and fulfilling career in quantity surveying, these are my top ten suggestions.
1. Know Yourself
Some people are cut out to be specialists and some are not. And it takes time; there are no short-cuts. The qualities you need to go down this path include particular abilities, mindsets and resources. Be truthful with yourself and ask do you actually like numbers and the urban environment since that is exactly what quantity surveying is all about.
2. Plan But be Flexible
You have to think about this long prior to taking the standard path to obtain a degree. The best strategy is to look ten years ahead and consider your likes and dislikes, what resources you have and exactly what is practical. If you do not go down the university path, don’t panic as education can be picked up along the way by means of part-time study and the Internet and probably a phone app in a couple of years time.
You have to start early and believe broadly. There are many practical abilities necessary to be an effective QS. Summertime experience in a regional store learning ways to sell and develop your people skills is never lost. Using a gap year to take a trip the world may equal out with that summertime task as a program of your experiences. There’s a great line in between which is preferred.
3. Be Hard Core
Clients are purchasing services from professionals and nothing else. Exactly what will you be selling to these customers when you are a working quantity property surveyor? You must have the ability to recognize skills that the market wants and you must ensure you have those skills. This becomes part of the earlier planning procedure and understanding what you are capable of doing. These abilities are typically universal technical disciplines such as financing, quantification, law, estimating and economics. It takes years of repetition to develop these skills, and specialising too early or focusing on soft ‘glam’ topics (attempt I state ‘sustainability’) is really hazardous. You need to have hard, technical, analytical skills to be a successful professional.
I would include that you do not accept an expat job until you have these skills under your belt as expat jobs are infamous for an absence of core skill training and ‘distracting’ individuals from reality!
4. Soft Skills are Critical
Regardless of an era when we depend upon devices, you must be able to deal with and manage people. Developing your people skills is an essential quality you will need as a QS. You will need to be able to get in touch with individuals from all strolls of life and get them to do things. This is certainly not a simple job.
You have to build a network. This means a collection of people and organisations that can offer you with recommendations, mentoring, jobs and excellent old made support particularly if things go wrong. You can not pay for to be an island– no expert quantity property surveyor is. You have to develop your professional network to grow your career. Be good and state ‘hi’ to everyone.
6. Be Proactive, Show Spark
There are countless individuals requesting your dream job. The competition in the expert market is intense and getting more difficult. Think of how a company bombarded with CVs will select yours. Something you can do is take the initiative and do something that shows your enthusiasm or that you are prepared to take some effort and leaves you standing a cut above the rest.
An example of this is a young woman I interviewed some years back. She told me that as the result of the movie ‘The Life of David Gale’ she had begun her own advocacy group against capital punishment. Things like that stick in a prospective employer’s memory and make the candidate stand out.
7. Presentation is Everything
Yes it still applies; whatever you do, speak, wear, tattoo, write states something about you. In fact it is a lot more essential that you learn how to handle this now as the Internet and social media suggest that this information about you is offered to companies too. If you want to be an expert you have to act like one.
8. Work Hard
I know it sounds apparent but if you want to prosper you have to work hard for it. It can’t be prevented and you will likely have to strive at things you do not like or delight in. You have to understand this and able to inspire yourself as you will need to survive the paperwork and spreadsheets that are the lot of amount property surveyors.
9. Focus however See the Big Picture
Focus your analytical skills like a laser to provide crucial insights, but likewise presenting the big photo for clients is an excellent and needed capability for a QS. I would encourage you to establish some practical abilities such as DIY, to read commonly and have lots of variety in your life as well as time to show. These are all useful ways to establish and train yourself to see the big and the small.
10. Never ever be Afraid
An expert is a master of discipline and is not scared to show his mastery. This can be easier said than done when surrounded by other experts or when you need to provide bad news, but this is exactly what you are being spent for. It’s about getting outside your comfort zone.
Last Words of Advice
It’s a long road to being a successful expert and sadly for amount surveyors you are never going to get the spotlight that physicians and lawyers get. However if you want a profession that has range, chance for travel, includes individuals, is open to everybody then begin now on the QS roadway!
