Top 10 Tips to Start Your Construction Career
If you do not wish to get stuck in a dead-end job but have an effective and gratifying career in quantity surveying, these are my leading ten suggestions.
1. Know Yourself
Some people are cut out to be experts and some are not. And it takes some time; there are no short-cuts. The qualities you have to decrease this path include specific abilities, mindsets and resources. Be truthful with yourself and ask do you truly like numbers and the metropolitan environment because that is what quantity surveying is everything about.
2. Strategy But be Flexible
You need to think about this long prior to taking the traditional path to obtain a degree. The best plan is to look 10 years ahead and consider your likes and dislikes, what resources you have and exactly what is practical. If you do not go down the university path, don’t worry as education can be picked up along the way through part-time study and the Internet and probably a phone app in a couple of years time.
You need to start early and think broadly. There are lots of useful skills required to be an effective QS. Summer experience in a regional shop finding out how to offer and develop your people abilities is never ever squandered. Using a space year to travel the world may equal out with that summertime task as a show of your experiences. There’s a great line between which is preferred.
3. Be Hard Core
Customers are buying services from experts and nothing else. Exactly what will you be selling to these customers when you are a working amount surveyor? You must be able to determine abilities that the marketplace wants and you must ensure you have those abilities. This is part of the earlier planning process and understanding what you are capable of doing. These skills are typically universal technical disciplines such as finance, quantification, law, approximating and economics. It takes years of repeating to establish these abilities, and specialising prematurely or focusing on soft ‘glam’ topics (dare I say ‘sustainability’) is really hazardous. You must have hard, technical, analytical abilities to be an effective professional.
I would add that you don’t accept an expat job till you have these skills under your belt as expat jobs are notorious for a lack of core skill training and ‘distracting’ individuals from reality!
4. Soft Skills are Critical
Regardless of a period when we depend upon machines, you need to have the ability to handle and manage individuals. Establishing your individuals skills is an important quality you will require as a QS. You will have to be able to connect with individuals from all walks of life and get them to do things. This is certainly not an easy task.
You need to build a network. This implies a collection of people and organisations that can provide you with recommendations, mentoring, tasks and good old fashioned assistance especially if things go wrong. You can not afford to be an island– no professional quantity surveyor is. You have to develop your expert network to grow your career. Be good and say ‘hello’ to everybody.
6. Be Proactive, Show Spark
There are thousands of individuals getting your dream task. The competitors in the expert market is intense and getting more difficult. Consider how a company bombarded with CVs will choose yours. Something you can do is take the effort and do something that reveals your enthusiasm or that you are prepared to take some effort and leaves you standing a cut above the rest.
An example of this is a girl I interviewed some years back. She told me that as the outcome of the film ‘The Life of David Gale’ she had begun her own advocacy group against capital penalty. Things like that stick in a prospective company’s memory and make the candidate stand out.
7. Discussion is Everything
Yes it still applies; everything you do, speak, wear, tattoo, write states something about you. In fact it is a lot more important that you learn how to manage this now as the Internet and social networks suggest that this details about you is readily available to companies too. If you wish to be a professional you need to imitate one.
I understand it sounds obvious but if you wish to prosper you have to strive for it. It cannot be avoided and you will probably have to strive at things you do not like or delight in. You have to be aware of this and able to encourage yourself as you will have to get through the documentation and spreadsheets that are the lot of amount surveyors.
9. Focus however See the Big Picture
Focus your analytical skills like a laser to provide essential insights, however also providing the big picture for clients is a great and needed capability for a QS. I would advise you to develop some practical skills such as DIY, to read widely and have a lot of variety in your life along with time to show. These are all useful methods to develop and train yourself to see the big and the small.
10. Never ever hesitate
An expert is a master of discipline and is not afraid to show his proficiency. This can be simpler stated than done when surrounded by other specialists or when you need to give problem, but this is exactly what you are being paid for. It’s about getting outside your comfort zone.
Last Words of Advice
It’s a long roadway to being an effective expert and unfortunately for quantity surveyors you are never ever going to get the limelight that medical professionals and lawyers get. But if you desire a career that has range, chance for travel, includes individuals, is open to everybody then begin now on the QS roadway!
