Top 10 Tips to Start Your Construction Career
If you do not wish to get stuck in a dead-end job but have a successful and rewarding profession in quantity surveying, these are my leading 10 suggestions.
1. Know Yourself
Some people are cut out to be specialists and some are not. And it requires time; there are no short-cuts. The qualities you need to go down this path include certain skills, attitudes and resources. Be truthful with yourself and ask do you truly like numbers and the metropolitan environment since that is what amount surveying is everything about.
2. Plan But be Flexible
You have to think about this long prior to taking the standard path to obtain a degree. The best plan is to look 10 years ahead and consider your likes and dislikes, what resources you have and exactly what is realistic. If you do not go down the university path, don’t stress as education can be picked up along the method via part-time research study and the Internet and probably a phone app in a few years time.
You need to start early and believe broadly. There are lots of practical abilities essential to be an effective QS. Summer experience in a regional shop learning how to offer and establish your people skills is never lost. Using a space year to take a trip the world might equate to out with that summertime task as a program of your experiences. There’s a fine line in between which is preferred.
3. Be Hard Core
Customers are purchasing services from professionals and nothing else. Exactly what will you be offering to these clients when you are a working quantity surveyor? You need to be able to recognize abilities that the marketplace wants and you must ensure you have those skills. This becomes part of the earlier planning process and understanding what you are capable of doing. These abilities are usually universal technical disciplines such as finance, quantification, law, estimating and economics. It takes years of repeating to establish these abilities, and specialising prematurely or focusing on soft ‘glam’ subjects (attempt I say ‘sustainability’) is extremely dangerous. You must have hard, technical, analytical abilities to be an effective expert.
I would add that you do not accept an expat task till you have these abilities under your belt as expat tasks are infamous for an absence of core ability training and ‘distracting’ people from reality!
4. Soft Skills are Critical
In spite of an era when we depend upon makers, you need to have the ability to handle and manage people. Developing your people skills is a necessary quality you will need as a QS. You will have to be able to get in touch with people from all walks of life and get them to do things. This is absolutely not an easy job.
You have to build a network. This implies a collection of individuals and organisations that can supply you with recommendations, mentoring, tasks and great old made support particularly if things go wrong. You can not afford to be an island– no expert quantity surveyor is. You have to develop your professional network to grow your profession. Be good and state ‘hi’ to everyone.
6. Be Proactive, Show Spark
There are countless individuals obtaining your dream job. The competition in the professional market is extreme and getting harder. Think about how an employer bombarded with CVs will choose yours. Something you can do is take the initiative and do something that shows your passion or that you are prepared to take some initiative and leaves you standing a cut above the rest.
An example of this is a girl I spoke with some years earlier. She told me that as the result of the film ‘The Life of David Gale’ she had begun her own advocacy group against capital penalty. Things like that stick in a prospective employer’s memory and make the prospect stick out.
7. Discussion is Everything
Yes it still holds true; everything you do, speak, use, tattoo, write says something about you. In fact it is a lot more crucial that you learn to manage this now as the Internet and social media suggest that this info about you is offered to employers too. If you wish to be an expert you have to act like one.
I understand it sounds obvious however if you wish to succeed you have to work hard for it. It cannot be prevented and you will probably have to work hard at things you do not like or take pleasure in. You need to understand this and able to motivate yourself as you will need to get through the paperwork and spreadsheets that are the lot of quantity property surveyors.
9. Focus however See the Big Picture
Focus your analytical abilities like a laser to provide crucial insights, but also presenting the big photo for customers is a great and essential ability for a QS. I would advise you to develop some practical skills such as DIY, to read widely and have a lot of range in your life in addition to time to show. These are all valuable methods to develop and train yourself to see the huge and the small.
10. Never ever hesitate
An expert is a master of discipline and is not scared to show his mastery. This can be easier said than done when surrounded by other professionals or when you have to provide bad news, but this is exactly what you are being paid for. It’s about getting outdoors your comfort zone.
Last Words of Advice
It’s a long roadway to being a successful expert and sadly for quantity surveyors you are never ever going to get the limelight that medical professionals and legal representatives get. But if you want a profession that has range, chance for travel, involves people, is open to everyone then start now on the QS roadway!
